Thinking Ergonomically Means Thinking Safety

SAFETY

Good ergonomic design helps protect the tendons which attach muscles to bones and, in turn, help move the fingers. Equally, good ergonomics help protect the nerves necessary for feeling and movement of the fingers.

Follow these precautions to avoid injury, pain, and discomfort:

Always protect hands while working outside. Proper gloves will reduce blisters, and protect your skin from fertilizers, pesticides, bacteria and fungus present in the soil. Soil exposure on even the smallest cut or lesion can potentially result in a major hand infection. Leather gloves provide some protection from thorny objects, snake, rodent, and insect bites, poison ivy and other skin irritants. Additionally, gloves minimize sunburn and fingernail damage.

Avoid long, drawn-out periods of repetitive motion activity, particularly if you are not accustomed to the task at hand. Repetitive motions, like hedge trimming, raking, digging, bush pruning, or bulb planting, may cause skin, tendon or nerve irritation. Ensure your gardening activities are varied with tasks rotated every 10 – 15 minutes, including brief rests in between, thus providing muscles the opportunity to decompress and adjust.

Remain vigilant while digging. Jagged objects and buried debris can result in tendon gashes or other injuries. Always use a rake or shovel rather than your hand, for digging.

One way to avoid accidents is by using the pruning scissors or garden pruners only for the purpose they were designed.

When purchasing pruners, loppers, or shears, look for brands like Till Harvest which feature a safety lock, and always keep sharp tools away from children at all times.

It is essential to practice proper ergonomic posture. This includes not only your entire body position, but also your wrist angle, particularly while using hand tools. Grip strength is maximized while the wrist is in a relaxed or neutral position. Tests indicate people lose nearly 25% of grip strength while their wrist is bent.

The non-adjustable pruner can be problematic. Those with larger hands often find their fingers overlap the tool, ultimately causing pain, soreness, and calluses. Those with smaller hands are forced to spread their fingers to gain control. Testing has proven such finger spreading significantly reduces grip strength and requires more pressure just to maintain control of the pruner.

What people are saying

  • Till Harvest look great!

    Billy Long-Mcelhanon

As a Chiropractor, I see patients with carpel tunnel syndrome and lateral epicondylitis, I have to say that I have been telling my patients who are gardeners how beneficial these pruners are and how they will prevent orthopedic issues from arising!! It's an absolute to have these ergonomic pruners!! These specially designed pruners offer so much less stress on the nerves and arteries in the wrist! And less stress on the muscles and tendons at the elbow! I use my hands and upper extremities daily, and I have to say that these are a must to have in your gardening tool box!

  • Great Ergonomic Design and Very Comfortable to Use

    By Rocky C. on September 26, 2015

A realy great pruning shears that fits perfectly in my hand. After trimming five Escallonias in my backyard my hand was not sore. I attribute this to the rotating handle that turns as you make a cut. The cutting blade is titanium coated so it won't corrode too. I love it.

I couldn't be more happy with this clippers. I have a small hand and it adjusts easily to fit my grip. The swivel ergonomic handle moved with my hand movements and my grip. No other clippers we have in the toolshet are this easy to work with. No more tired hand muscles! It certainly feels like real value for the price. I love it.

  • Good for Arthritic Hands

By Badger on September 27, 2015

I have arthritis in my hands rather badly, and I used your shears yesterday for about two hours to begin yard clearance for Fall. Typically when I do this, the next day my hands are very stiff and I need to take a pain pill. This morning my hands are fine. It's a well designed product and I look forward to using them often. Thank you

  • These pruners are a joy to use

By Sue Doss on September 25, 2015

These pruners are a joy to use. I ordered and received these just in time for 2 days of cutting flowers for flower arrangements. They fit perfectly in my hand and are so easy to use that even after cutting hundreds of flower stems my hands did not ache. The swivel action is the best part, no soreness or blisters. I am buying some more for my garden roses. I highly recommend these for florists and gardeners!!

  • Love these pruners!

By John Manders on September 17, 2015

I live in So. Cal and have 20+ pygmy dates palms in my yard, so I am constantly pruning them. Most of them have multiple trunks in the 8 foot range. I have several pairs of Coronas and Fiskers pruners and after using these I much prefer The Gentle Gian Pruner on a daily basis! They are extremely sharp which makes trimming close to the trunk very easy and with the ergonomic handle my wrist does not get tired. The adjustable grip is perfect for when my other half is working in the garden. I highly recommend the Gentle Giant Pruners and plan to purchase a second pair for the palms in the backyard. They are a winner as far as I am concerned.
